About Region

South IndianLake is situated on an arm of the lakethat joins South Bayto the main body of the Lake. Approximatelytwo-thirds of the residents are members of the Nelson House Band, many of whomcan trace ancestry back to the 1920s.

The community is about 130 air kmNorthwest of Thompson and 64 air km from Leaf Rapids. PR # 391, which connectsboth Thompson and Leaf Rapids, also extends to South Bay,providing access to the ferry/barge in season.

The community has undergone majorchange as a result of the Churchill River Diversion, which causes water to flowsouth to the Rat River,then through the Burntwood river into the Nelson River to provide additionalwater for Hydro development on the lower Nelson River.

Recognized as a community  in 1971 by the department, and incorporatedin 1999, the community is governed by an incorporated Council consisting ofmayor and councillors under The Northern Affairs Act.
